James Donald Ashton

Ashton, James Donald "Jim" age 76, died Wednesday April 27, 2022 at Sycamore Hospital in Miamisburg, OH. He was born on January 29, 1946 in Dayton, OH. He was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Katherine Collins Manning and step-father, John David Manning. He was a graduate of Fairborn High School class of 1964 and then from Ohio State University with a BS in 1970, Undergraduate subjects Astronomy and Physics.
Jim proudly served our country for 10 years in the US Navy onboard Fleet Ballistic Missle submarines operating the Ships Inertial Navigation System. He also served as a Navy instructor at the Naval Submarine Training Center, Pacific, located in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He held Top Secret security clearances.
He worked for several government contractors: Hughes Technical Services Co., Raytheon Systems Co., Lockheed Martin Technology Services Group.

Some of his many positions include: Trained personnel in satellite tracking and communication, and was a site analyst involving operations with the US Space Command. Responsible for operation, maintenance and repair of radar systems, including NASA support. He held Top Secret/COMSEC/NATO security clearance. He retired from O’Neil Associates as a technical writer.

Jim loved astronomy, trains, reading, computers and art. At one point, he purchased the contents of a small library that was closing. He truly enjoyed his travels during his military and civilian career.

He is survived by several cousins and his Aunt Francis Leurs. Graveside Service will be held 12:30PM Friday May 13, 2022 at Forest Hills Memorial Gardens in Tipp City. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his memory to the US Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH. Online memories and condolences may be left for the family here at our website.
